Things to revert back on Ubuntu Natty
Posted by Aapo Rantalainen on May 19, 2011
At last I upgraded my work laptop to Ubuntu Natty (11.04). I feel oldish, but there were changes I didn’t like…
Ubuntu
* Disable Unity and revert back to normal Gnome.
e.g. http://www.khattam.info/howto-disable-unity-interface-and-restore-original-interface-in-ubuntu-natty-narwhal-2010-11-28.html
* Uninstall zeitgeist logger (creepy thing, more: http://johanharjono.com/archives/836 )
I just uninstalled it.
Firefox
I also jump from Firefox 3 to 4. It is cool, but…
*Revert back: Tabs under url-bar
e.g. http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=2075417
I have read (and watched video) why tabs are raised over url-bar, but it doesn’t match for me, look at my tabs:

* Home button was far away right, reverted it back to left.
* No status-bar! I have a) quick-proxy-button and b) linkification-button there. And I didn’t like the c) way how link locations are shown as tooltips (actually it might be good if link locations are shown _exactly_ as tooltips i.e. on place, not bottom)
Installed: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/status-4-evar/

I’ve had tabs on the side for years.. f.ex.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tree-style-tab
Status-4-evar was the second extension I added when I went to 4 beta, first one was https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter/ though also heavily customized user.js disables addons’ compatibility/version checking.
Annoyance about new status bar:
I’d like to have buttons in status bar below, but text in back/forward/reload/stop, now I can’t.
Changing text/icons/text&icons applies to both. Grrh. Have to look further into that someday.
On status bar I also have buttons for quickjava, cookie whitelist (also notifies me if I forget “accept all cookies” on), linkification, noscript, requestpolicy, screengrabber, scrapbook..
One design change I never understood and still don’t accept was that RSS icon was moved away from address bar, so user has to choose him/herself it being visible. Most of the people go by defaults, so they will never see it.

I vote for Chromium but I’d like to have multi-row tabs too..
